What Full-Scale Fabrication Really Means – And How to Choose the Right Steel Partner

Back to Industry News

A lot of steel shops say they offer “full fabrication.” But what does that actually include? If you’re sourcing a project—whether it’s a tank, catwalk, platform, or custom frame—understanding what’s in-house and what’s outsourced can make or break your budget and timeline.

What Does Full-Scale Fabrication Actually Include?

At its core, full-service or full-scale fabrication should cover every major step from raw steel to final delivery. That means:

  • Design Consulting & Spec Review
  • Cutting (plasma, laser, saw)
  • Forming & Shaping (press brake, shearing)
  • Welding (by certified pros)
  • Surface Prep & Coating (paint, galvanizing, etc.)
  • Quality Inspection
  • Delivery or On-Site Drop-off

If a shop can’t offer at least 80% of that in-house, you’re likely paying extra for subcontractors—and risking delays.

Red Flags When Vetting a Fabricator:

  • They outsource all the cutting or welding
  • No AWS-certified welders on staff
  • Lead times are vague or “floating”
  • No clear record of similar project types
  • Safety and compliance are not mentioned up front
